Causes of Impotence
It has been reported that as many as 30 million men experience erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence. Impotence is defined as the inability to attain or maintain an erection of the penis for sexual satisfaction. As a result, a man’s self-esteem can decrease, as impotence becomes more of a problem.
Many causes of erectile dysfunction, include but are not limited to:
- Depression
- Stress
- Age
- Fatigue
- Personal fears related to sex
- Tension
- Faulty veins which allow blood to drain quickly from the penis
- Conditions that block the flow of blood to the penis
- Certain medications
- Smoking
- Diabetes
Conditions that block blood flow to the penis such as atherosclerosis or diabetes can result in a male not being able to get an erection. In addition, certain prescription medications such as stimulants, sedatives, diuretics, antihistamines, and drugs to treat high blood pressure, cancer, or depression may interfere with the necessary nerve signals being sent to the penis. But never stop a medication unless your doctor tells you to. Alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs, such as marijuana, may also contribute to the dysfunction. At our Las Vegas urology practice, we offer a wide variety of diagnostic tests to identify the cause of ED.
